AU Pro Volleyball scoring

Athletes Unlimited built a league where the champion is a person, not a team. A running leaderboard tracks every athlete individually all season, and the four players sitting on top each week become captains who redraft their own rosters. Here is how those points are earned.

The three ways to score

  1. Win points — when your team wins a set or wins the match. These are the big ones; they make up the large majority of a typical leaderboard score.
  2. Plus/minus play points — kills, aces, blocks, assists and digs add points; attack and service errors take points away.
  3. MVP votes — players and fans vote three MVPs after every match.

Win points

  • Win a setEvery player on the winning side of that set+10
  • Win the matchAwarded to every player on the winning team+50

Match MVP votes

  • MVP 1+60
  • MVP 2+40
  • MVP 3+20

Plus/minus play points

  • Kill+4
  • Ace+4
  • Stuff block+4
  • Assist+1
  • Dig+1
  • Attack error-2
  • Service error-1

Worked example

An attacker who records 14 kills, 2 aces and 1 block, with 3 attack errors, in a match her team wins 3 sets to 1 could add roughly 190 points: 40 for the sets won, 50 for the match, plus play points for the kills, aces and block minus the errors.

Why the leaderboard decides the captains

Teams are redrafted every week, and the four players sitting at the top of the leaderboard become captains and pick their own rosters for the week ahead. That is why win points matter so much: choosing the right side each week is the fastest route up the board.
